Featuring a minor guest appearance by Jon Bon Jovi, Cinderella's debut album, Night Songs, positions the band as a second-tier pop-metal outfit, with a mix of ballads ("Nobody's Fool") and rockers ("Somebody Save Me") one might find on an album by any similar '80s band with a high-pitched vocalist. It's not bad, just generic; the band does hint at the potential it would fulfill on later albums, but little of Cinderella's own personality shows through at this point.

Cinderella - Live Train To Heartbreak Station [1991][MP3 DOWNLOAD]

You've seen it over and over again since the advent of the compact disc: best-of collections or live sets from veteran rock acts getting reissued countless times, with different titles/cover artwork, but the same exact music. Such is the case with the 2004 Cinderella release, Live from the Gypsy Road. Recorded over two nights in October of 1998, the album was originally released in 1999 as Live at the Keyclub, before being issued as In Concert in 2004, and then finally being reissued for an unprecedented third time later the same year. All this leads you to wonder -- is this some sort of record for most repackagings/reissues of the same album in the shortest period of time? Regardless, all of Cinderella's greatest hits are here, and singer/guitarist Tom Keifer continues to have all his Steven Tyler-isms down pat. Included are rockers that reflect both '80s era pop-metal ("Shake Me," "Gypsy Road") and power ballads ("Nobody's Fool," "Don't Know What You Got"), as well as tracks that show Cinderella had more in common with the Stones than Bon Jovi at times (especially "Shelter Me"). For fans curious to hear if Cinderella could still cut it live in the late '90s, 'Live from the Gypsy Road' is recommended. Just be careful that you don't already own one of the aforementioned titles.

Long Cold Winter is a transition album for Cinderella, mixing pop-metal tunes with better hooks than those on Night Songs with a newfound penchant for gritty blues-rock à la the Stones or Aerosmith. The ballads — the grandiose "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" and the excellent, lower-key "Coming Home" — are what made the album Cinderella's most commercially successful, but the effective combination of pop hooks and tough, swaggering rock & roll on songs like "Gypsy Road" and "Fallin' Apart at the Seams" prevents the album from becoming simply a vehicle for hit singles and keeps it interesting. Not all of the songs are memorable, but most of them are.

After successful albums that effectively followed contemporary hard rock trends, Cinderella reached back into the Stones and Aerosmith songbooks and created a sneering, raunchy hard rock album that was artistically their finest moment, even if it didn't reach the same commercial heights as its predecessors. But the sales figures don't matter (it only sold a million copies); Heartbreak Station shows that Cinderella has more genuine rock & roll grit than most of the metal bands of the late '80s.

Sepultura - The Roots of Sepultura [1997]MP3 DOWNLOAD]

Not to be confused with the similarly titled Sepultura albums Roots or Blood Rooted, The Roots of Sepultura was a promo-only CD compilation of the band's strongest tracks and hard-to-find rarities. Released just before the groundbreaking Roots album, it predated the 1997 rarities/outtakes collection Blood Rooted. Interestingly, there is almost no overlap between the rare tracks included on Roots Of and Blood Rooted. It would make sense for Roadrunner to officially release this disc since it would serve as the ultimate final chapter of Sepultura's inventive thrash metal (leader Max Cavalera and the group split in 1997). Whereas bands like Metallica and Anthrax peaked early on in their careers and eventually ran out of ideas, Sepultura's songwriting only improved over time, which is obvious when listening to this album from beginning to end. Included are the band's breakthrough songs, "Refuse/Resist (Live)" and "Territory," perfect covers of both Black Sabbath's "Symptom of the Universe" and Motörhead's "Orgasmatron," and the early transitional track "Dead Embryonic Cells." The only reason why this release isn't the ultimate essential Sepultura overview is because it doesn't contain selections from their most accomplished album, Chaos A.D.. Still, The Roots of Sepultura is heavy metal at its most gripping and passionate (two words usually not associated with the music).

Sepultura - Against [1998][ALBUM DOWNLOAD]

It was generally assumed among most that without guitarist/vocalist Max Cavalera, Sepultura would choose not to carry on, but the remaining members added vocalist Derrick Green (who often sounds much like Cavalera) and recorded Against. The results are much better than one might expect from a band that's lost its leader, as Andreas Kisser, Paulo Jr., and Igor Cavalera prove they're no slouches themselves. But the problem with Against is that it seems to lack a clear vision or direction; the band seems unsure of whether to return to the controlled, hard-hitting brevity of Chaos A.D. or the epic, experimental sprawl of Roots. And while the group's trademark ethnic fusions are present — most notably the Japanese-flavored instrumental "Kamaitachi" (featuring the percussion troupe Kodo and some lovely flute) and the violin-centered "T3rcermillennium," two of the album's most intriguing tracks — some of the songs don't really experiment much at all. As a result, the fusions sometimes sound forced, and some songs are too standard a brand of hardcore-tinged thrash'n'bash to match the highest points of the Sepultura catalog, even with Jason Newsted co-writing and playing on the track "Hatred Aside." So all in all, Against finds the band regrouping and struggling to recalibrate itself, which is to be expected given the circumstances; even if it's somewhat disappointing compared to the group's best work, it's much better than one might hope, and there are enough flashes of the old Sepultura brilliance to suggest that great things are still to come.

Sepultura - Morbid Visions - Bestial Devastation [1986][ALBUM DOWNLOAD]

Sepultura's early work can be described as extremely raw, under-produced, and unspectacular death metal, hardly a harbinger of their groundbreaking early-'90s output. Thankfully, Roadrunner conveniently reissued the band's first album, 1986's Morbid Visions, and its 1985 EP Bestial Devastation on one CD. Recorded with minimal time and money, this material reveals a band still learning its craft; in fact, original lead guitarist Jairo T. is the only decent musician of the bunch. Still, Sepultura shows early flashes of death metal inspiration on "Warriors of Death," "Crucifixion," and "Show Me the Wrath," while "Troops of Doom" (later re-recorded) is the only obvious standout.

Sepultura - Roorback [2003][MP3 DOWNLOAD]

Losing a lead singer can be incredibly disruptive for a band. Some bands will bounce back — AC/DC, for example, sounded better than ever when it hired Brian Johnson after Bon Scott's untimely death — while others will suffer a creative decline. Sepultura experienced a major loss when former lead singer Max Cavalera left to form Soulfly in 1996, but thankfully, Derrick Green proved to be a highly capable replacement. If 1998's mildly uneven Against — Sepultura's first album with Green — found the band struggling with the transition, Green was filling Cavalera's shoes much more confidently on 2001's Nation. And if there are still any lingering doubts about the Green/Sepultura match, 2003's excellent Roorback should put them to rest for good. Green is passionate and focused throughout the album — he has no problem going that extra mile — and the writing is consistently strong. Unrest and political corruption are recurring themes on Roorback; American singer Green and his Brazilian colleagues spare no anger on incendiary tracks like "Mind War," "Apes of God," and the crushing opener, "Come Back Alive" (which is about surviving the horrors of wartime combat). The songs that Sepultura wrote for Roorback paint a consistently bleak and troubling picture of the world — one that is only reinforced by an unlikely remake of U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky" appended to the album. Sepultura successfully give U2's gem a ferocious alternative metal makeover, and Bono's dark lyrics are right at home on this politically charged CD. When Roorback came out during the summer of 2003, Sepultura had been together for 19 years — and this compelling disc finds them very much on top of their game after almost two decades in the metal field.

A quote from the Dalia Lama, "Peace on earth depends on the peace in the people's hearts," and wise words from Mother Teresa, Ghandi, and Albert Einstein grace the album booklet of Sepultura's 2001 release, Nation. When Sepultura's vocalist Derrick Green screams long and hard enough, you bet your sweet, tender eardrums that he's got something important to say. On its 2001 release, Nation, the Brazilian quartet is infuriated — and with good reason. As Green scrapes the lining of his vocal chords through the brash, impassioned tracks, he's singing about more than just "one nation, Sepulnation"; he's suggesting something bigger, something worth shouting about and fighting for. Nation was created to epitomize Sepultura's concept of creating a new nation built upon the foundations of unity and a utopian society that thrives without violence or guns. In interviews, Green has said, "Every song will be related to the idea of building this nation. We will have our own flags, our own anthem." Leave it to Sepultura to break down the walls and build something beautiful out of the rubble. Indeed, each song meets these expectations in a series of hard-rockin', tight tunes. Drummer Igor Cavalera's timing and tempo couldn't be more perfect as the adrenaline heightens until the album's intensity burns right through the speakers. Die-hard Sepultura fans will likely salivate over skull-crushing tracks like "Who Must Die?," and when Green sings "you are our livestock/we make you love it" on the creepy anticorruption song "Politricks," Sepultura virgins will be speechless. The album explodes with the final track, "Valtio," an instrumental piece (complete with violins) that sounds more like the score to a war movie, with the innocent lying in waste in the dust. Trust that Nation is far more real and way scarier than when your mean older brother used to lock you in the closet and play Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," but it's well worth the ride.

Flowers in the Dirt did earn good reviews but perhaps more important was its accompanying tour, McCartney's first full-fledged world tour in years. Given the tour's enthusiastic reception, McCartney could wait until 1993 to deliver the album's proper sequel, Off the Ground. Though it isn't as consciously ambitious, Off the Ground certainly picks up where Flowers left off, as McCartney feels no shame in making an album that doesn't aim for the charts (though success would certainly be welcomed), yet is still classy, professional, and ambitious. Two key differences appear: It's a leaner production (making the mid-tempo numbers seem less cloying and giving the rockers real kick), and McCartney's social conscience dominates the record (which is easily his most politically active, as he rails against animal testing and pleads for world peace several times). He doesn't leave love or whimsy behind ("Biker Like an Icon" is easily his worst, most studied stab at whimsy), and he still has a pair of fine McCartney/McManus songs ("Mistress and Maid," "The Lovers That Never Were") to pull out. This all results in a record that has its virtues — it's clean and direct, where many of his solo albums are diffuse and meandering, and it's serious-minded where many rely on cutesiness — but, overall, Off the Ground feels like less than the sum of its parts, possibly because the seriousness is too studied, perhaps because the approach is a bit too stodgy. Nevertheless, this has nearly as many successful moments as Flowers in the Dirt, standing as a deliberately serious comeback record by an artist who spent too much time relying on his natural charm, and who feels no shame in overcompensating at this stage of the game.

An album of Duran Duran covering their "influences" was never something even the most dedicated fan wanted to hear, yet the band had the audacity to record Thank You, a collection of the group's favorite songs. Featuring songwriters as diverse as Bob Dylan and Sly Stone, Thank You works best when the band realizes the monumental silliness of its cover, as on "White Lines," which is performed with Grandmaster Flash himself, and the acoustic blues rendition of Public Enemy's "911 Is a Joke." Or it works when the band can reinvent material like Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" into a slick MOR ballad. When Thank You doesn't work, it's because the band doesn't quite get what made the original version special ("Lay Lady Lay" and "Watching the Detectives"). Too many plain, mediocre songs (the Doors' "Crystal Ship") prevent the album from being either unintentionally funny or genuinely successful. The record is solely a curiosity and not a very interesting one at that.

Like all the Shaggy compilations before it, Virgin's 2008 collection fails to deliver what would be the dream comp, one that puts early hits like "Boombastic" and "Oh Carolina" next to later ones like "It Wasn't Me" and "Church Heathen." Until the day the record labels the dancehall superstar has been with play nice, Best Of is a worthy recommendation. The previously mentioned early cuts are included alongside the Maxi Priest duet "That Girl" and the underappreciated "Why You Treat Me So Bad" single. Entertaining cover versions of "In the Summertime" and "Piece of My Heart" seal the deal, while well-chosen album cuts provide the B+ filler. Know that what you're really getting is The Best of the Virgin Years and this set doesn't disappoint.

While writing and recording The Game, Queen were asked by renowned movie director Dino DeLaurentis to provide the soundtrack for his upcoming sci-fi epic Flash Gordon. The band accepted and promptly began working on both albums simultaneously. Although at first many fans criticized Flash Gordon since it was issued as an official Queen release rather than a motion picture soundtrack, it has proven to be one of rock's better motion picture soundtracks over the years. The majority of the music is instrumental, with dialogue from the movie in place of Freddie Mercury's singing (only two tracks contain lyrics), but the songwriting is still unmistakably Queen. Highlights abound, such as "Football Fight," "Vultan's Theme (Attack of the Hawkmen)," "The Wedding March," and the heavy metal roar of "Battle Theme." But it was the two more conventional songs that were the album's two best tracks — the anthemic U.K. Top Ten hit "Flash's Theme" and the woefully underrated rocker "The Hero." With Queen involved, Flash Gordon is certainly not your average, predictable soundtrack.
